Riesser, Gabriel

(1806-63)
   German lawyer and politician. He was born in Hamburg. After he was refused permission to practise as a notary in his native city because of his faith, he published a series of memoranda and articles demanding civil equality for Jewry. He became an important advocate of emancipation for German Jews. From 1832 to 1837 he edited Der Jude. He was elected to the parliament at Frankfurt am Main in 1848 and was a member of the 1850 'Union' parliament at Erfurt. In 1859 he became the first Jewish judge in Germany.
